As the owner of Mount Lawley Pest Control, my job involves dealing with a lot of what nature throws our way. But there’s one place where I’m happy to put my tools down and simply appreciate the environment: Lake Monger.
Located just a short drive from Mount Lawley, this magnificent lake is a true natural treasure for our city. It’s more than just a body of water; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem and a hub for the community. The 3.5-kilometer path that circles the lake is a staple for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, and on any given day, you’ll see people of all ages enjoying the fresh air and stunning views.
The most famous residents of Lake Monger are, of course, the Black Swans. They’re a symbol of our state for a reason. Seeing them glide across the water is a peaceful and beautiful sight. But they’re not alone. The lake is a haven for an incredible variety of waterbirds, from coots and ducks to herons and cormorants. It’s a fantastic spot for birdwatching, and you can learn more about the wildlife from the interpretive displays along the boardwalk.
Lake Monger has a rich history, known as “Galup” to the Noongar people, who used the area for food and shelter for thousands of years. It’s a place with deep cultural significance, and you can feel that sense of history as you walk around the tranquil waters.
While my professional life is about keeping pests out of homes and businesses, Lake Monger is a perfect reminder of the beauty and importance of a healthy, balanced ecosystem. It’s a place that brings our community together, providing a space for exercise, relaxation, and a connection with nature. So, if you’re ever in need of a quiet moment away from the hustle and bustle, I highly recommend a visit to Lake Monger.
