As the owner of Mount Lawley Pest Control, my life is often spent in the urban environment, but my appreciation for nature is never far away. There is no better place in our city to find a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and community than Kings Park.
It’s one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, and it sits majestically atop Mount Eliza, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Swan and Canning Rivers, the city skyline, and the Darling Ranges. This view alone makes it a must-visit, but what I truly love is the feeling of stepping into a different world just minutes from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Kings Park is a place of deep cultural and historical significance. Known as “Kaarta Gar-up” to the Whadjuk Noongar people, it was a traditional ceremonial ground for thousands of years. This heritage is honoured throughout the park, and you can feel the serenity and history in its ancient bushland.
The Western Australian Botanic Garden within the park is a showcase of our state’s incredible biodiversity. It’s home to over 3,000 species of Western Australian flora. Every spring, the annual Kings Park Festival puts on a spectacular display of wildflowers that is simply unmatched. It’s a reminder of just how unique and beautiful our native plant life is.
Beyond the gardens, there are so many things to see and do. The State War Memorial is a powerful and moving tribute to our servicemen and women, and the solemnity of the Anzac Day Dawn Service here is something everyone should experience. For a more adventurous outing, the Lotterywest Federation Walkway takes you on a treetop journey with incredible views. And for families, the playgrounds and picnic areas provide a perfect spot for a weekend gathering.
Whether I’m going for a quiet walk, meeting friends for a coffee, or just taking in the views, Kings Park is a constant source of pride for our city. It’s a place that connects us to our history, our nature, and each other.
